Koch Industries is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, operating in a diverse array of sectors across 60 countries. Commissioned by Koch Industries to design their new workplace, Peldon Rose located and refurbished an existing office at 20 Wood Street, London, repurposing it to suit the needs of the multinational conglomerate. With a keen focus on improving the space for both visitors and employees, the new workplace not only enhances the overall experience, but transforms it into one that distinctly belongs to Koch Industries.
The welcome area has been rejuvenated from a previously dark space with few discerning elements, into a bright, airy and warm destination. Existing black walls and ceilings have been painted white and refined to illuminate the space, while sofas and chairs in signature ‘Koch Blue’ imbue the space with vibrancy and colour.
Koch Industries’ brand logo sits stylishly backlit on a calm and inviting oak facade, drawing the eye of visitors entering the space directly from the lifts. Koch Industries’ storytelling timeline spans along the length of the wall, dating back to 1904, highlighting their rich history. A model container ship encased in glass sits in the centre of the space, spotlighting Koch Fertilizer, one of the many important divisions within this office.
A combination of new and pre-existing closed offices located throughout the workspace ensures cohesion and uniformity. 11 new cellular offices have been created, in keeping with the existing style, complete with striking black metal framing and fluted glass banding that provides privacy for senior executives. All offices and meeting rooms have a resimercial design, blending residential comfort and commercial professionalism. Blue woven carpets provide a calming effect while also aligning with the company’s identity, and new ceiling panels improve acoustics, softening noise. Rigorous infrastructure throughout the office accommodates the needs of the trading floor, ensuring there is constant power and security.
A large breakout space offers the opportunity for colleagues to socialise away from their desks. Ice blue chairs add a sense of energy while improved biophilia create a verdant and enjoyable environment. In the open plan workspace, floor to ceiling windows flood the office with natural light, and offer views of the iconic Gresham Street, connecting employees with the prominent location in which they work. A wellbeing room fitted with soft, calming furniture encourages relaxation, in turn increasing employee satisfaction and productivity.
Peldon Rose worked closely with Koch Industries to achieve sustainability throughout the project. Pre-existing furniture, including meeting room tables and chairs, have all been retained, ensuring minimal waste. All furniture that was not reused was either sold or donated to schools and charities, guaranteeing no good quality furniture was sent to landfill, and providing resources for the community.
